The Minority Male Student Success Programs (Men of L.E.G.A.C.I.) at the University Houston-Downtown is currently providing support for collegiate male students of color in recruitment initiatives, course instructional support, tutoring, career placement and personalize mentoring. In order create additional resources we understand that to serve as many male students of color as possible, we need to all of our partners to be included in this work.
That includes what we call the ‘4 Elements’; Earth, Wind, Fire and Water
1) Community – Families and Non-Profit Agencies
2) K-12 – School Districts
3) Higher Education - Community Colleges and Universities
4) Career Development - Industry Partners
We recognize that male students of color in the greater Houston network have a variety of options to within the city to choose a platform for higher education, but we also recognize that the support at each school (higher education) might be different. But what if that support (to some degree) was the same no matter what school they attended after high school…what if we could create a ‘corridor’ that would provide avenues of support that no matter where they ended up in Houston we could place them within a group(s) that could foster support around their academic achievement and career development.
We are preparing to discuss a major undertaking to support enrollment, retention and graduation for male students of color who attend all of our institutions in greater Houston. If you are interested in being a part of this undertaking, please attend this session for more details.
